When Luc Besson makes an eye-popping, operatic science-fiction/action movie, it’s cause for excitement. Based on the French graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline from writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières, Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets casts stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as special operatives tasked with saving the future of the universe. No big deal. Their mission takes them to a vast, peaceful metropolis known as Alpha, home to species from a thousand different planets that are under threat by an unknown menace. Besson’s previous film Lucy looks tame in comparison. Valerian appears to be more on the Fifth Element Besson tip, with the best parts of Avatar and a slinky Rihanna thrown in to seal the deal. We’re ready. Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21.
