Netflix already released the first minute-or-so of the fifth season of Orange Is the New Black last month, picking up where the gun-pointing cliffhanger of the fourth left off…and leaving us pretty much on the same cliffhanger. That was the first and last footage we’d seen of the anticipated upcoming blast of OITNB episodes, which will take place over the course of three days after the brutal and harrowing events at the end of Season 4 sparked a rebellion within Litchfield. Now, though, with the release of the full trailer for Season 5, you can get a glimpse at what will actually subsequently go down within the multifariously corrupt, mis-run, privatized women’s prison.
The trailer reveals snippets of what unfolds once the prisoners gain control of Litchfield, zooming in on what the likes of Taystee, Suzanne, Cindy, Red, Nichols, Morello, Flaca, Maritza, Alex, Mendoza, Piper, Big Boo, et al are up, as the power dynamics drastically shift, and in-fighting morphs into collectivization.
Danielle Brooks, whose character Taystee is shown taking a lead in the uprising in the trailer, told Gold Derby, “This season a grenade has gone off and Taystee pulled the pin. [Now], they are taking away having the guards and staff set up everything with the women’s lives and now the prisoners setting up a new dynamic.”
Taylor Schilling (Piper) recently spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the season, which will be available to stream on Netflix on June 9; she said that “the collective stakes for the first time are heightened. Where everyone is dealing with the same crisis and has the same issue and in that, it’s really interesting to see alliances come together and what parts of people come to shine. It’s very cool to have everybody on the same mission together.”
