Okay, look, normally the notion of a “trailer teaser” is enough to make our collective skin crawl, hair catch afire, and eyes bleed – it is, after all, a commercial for a commercial, which is a marketing Inception that we should not tolerate, much less promote. But you see, there’s this new John Cameron Mitchell movie, based on a Neil Gaiman story, and it’s got Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman in it, so here we are.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties is a ’70s period piece starring Alex Sharp as a shy British punk rocker who’s at that particular point in which girls seem like aliens from another planet, and then, ho ho, he meets one who is. Fanning is the girl in question, Zan, while Kidman co-stars as another scarily sexy alien, “Queen Boadicea.”
This is Fanning and Kidman’s second team-up of the year; they also star in one of our most anticipated movies of the summer, Sofia Coppola’s remake of Don Siegel’s The Beguiled.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties is screening out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Distributor A24 has not yet announced its theatrical release date.
