Willem Dafoe will play Vincent van Gogh in Julian Schnabel’s upcoming film At Eternity’s Gate. The feature, shot on location in France, will focus on the Dutch artist’s time in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise. “This is a film about painting and a painter and their relationship to infinity,” Schnabel told press. “It is told by a painter. It contains what I felt were essential moments in his life; this is not the official history — it’s my version. One that I hope could make you closer to him.” During his stay in Arles, Van Gogh’s work featured colorful landscapes full of olive trees, wheat fields, cypresses, and his iconic sunflowers. It was his most prolific period, until his death in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. Dafoe is currently in Cannes promoting Sean Baker’s The Florida Project and will soon appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiering on November 17.
