The nominees for our favorite literary award — The Bookseller Diagram Prize for the Oddest Title of the Year — have been announced. With over 90 titles submitted this year, the long list consists of the 49 oddest titles as determined by Horace Bent, the Bookseller diarist who oversees the award. Since its creation in 1978 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, winners have included Oral Sadism and the Vegetarian Personality (1986), How to Avoid Large Ships (1992), and Living with Crazy Buttocks (2002). After the jump, peep the titles and covers of our top 10. But read the titles first. It’s funnier that way.
I’m Not Hanging Noodles on Your Ears

The Wild World of “Girly Men” and Masculine Women!

Mickey Mouse, Hitler and Nazi Germany

Dental Management of Sleep Disorders

Afterthoughts of a Worm Hunter

The short list will be released and voting will begin on February 19th. Also, be on the look out for titles to submit for next year — the person who spots the winning title wins a magnum of champagne or a bottle of claret!

These books must become manditory for reading in schools
I would have to read them before suggesting they become mandatory reading in our schools. Students are already made to read stuff NOBODY should be forced to read. There are some funny titles that make you want to read them just to see the writers true intent.
I used to have The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories!!! I worked at the publisher and thought it was a hilarious title. My roommate read it on the Subway going to work on a bet. Ahh memories!
fav: “Is the Rectum a Grave?” :) my response: “huhh??”
now that we’ve seen the titles, how do we get our eyes inside them?
I am now, totally intrigued.

Pity the poor editor that had to concoct this list. And wonder a bit of the sad assignment of actually reading the texts, as if someone did?
