Documenting Jack and Meg White’s ambitious 2007 Canadian tour, Under Great White Northern Lights is both a compelling film and the White Stripes’ first official live album.

The duo took director Emmett Malloy on the road for the trip, which included stops in every single province in Canada. Along the way, the pair played a series of surprise shows, met with tribal elders, dressed in Scottish regalia, and celebrated its 10th anniversary as a band. The film captures all the high and lows of the trek, while the album features 16 tracks recorded live on the tour.

Visit the White Stripes’ official website, watch more videos on their YouTube channel, swing buy their MySpace page, buy the album and the DVD.

Them performing the last Late Night With Conan O’Brien last year.

I went to a White Stripes show in VA a couple years ago on my birthday. Though reportedly Jack thought the crowd was a dud, I LOVED the show. They’re great live. I’d love to see them again.

When they FINALLY made it on Flavorwire!

wow – What are the chances of that? Two Jennah/Jennas. WEIRD.

I was stoked on their appearance in the film Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil that explains the motifs they use in their music. Also, I saw them at the Greek Theater in Berkeley and took my little brother with me. It was his first concert and we were dead center. Really really awesome.

Icky Thump really blew me away when it came out.

White Stripes played with the Green Hornes for free on the Hudson River Piers about 4 years ago…Jack White is a guitar god and together they blew away the crowd..two people with more power and soul than bands triple their size!

Icky Thump was pretty amazing. “You can’t be a pimp and a prostitute too.”

Seeing them at the Glass House in Pomona in 2005 after Get Behind Me Satan came out. “Seven Nation Army” that night was the single greatest WS moment I’ve witnessed. Incredible.

my favorite moment in white stripes history was when i saw them live for the first time on coney island at the brooklyn cyclones stadium. when they took the stage, jack whipped out a polaroid camera and started taking photos of the crowd. after each shot, he would throw the photo into the audience. i actually caught one of the photos and, upon further inspection, it turned out to be a slightly blurry shot of a topless scott baio sucking face with some girl in the front row. the photo is now proudly displayed on the refrigerator in my home.

Jack taking Meg’s Last name what my favorite part of their history.

Watching them perform on Later Louder with Jools holland while they play Hotel Yorba and to see the way Meg watches Jack and how they perfectly gel together to create such a great sound.

watching Jack turn The Edges mind to custard and Jimmy Pages fingers to jelly in It Might Get Loud . Outstanding.

MY FAVORITE WHITE STRIPES MOMENT IS WHEN THEY PLAYED IN CHICAGO IL AND DID SONGS FROM THE MUSICAL CHICAGO (WHICH HAD JUST COME OUT) — NOTABLY THEY DID “MR. CELLOPHONE” IN A REALLY REALLY COOL WHITE STRIPES SORT OF WAY.

I realize it’s not necessarily a “White Stripes moment,” but Jack White’s role as the girl in the Electric Six video for “Danger! High Voltage” was incredible. I’d say the first time I saw that video was my favorite moment. No question.

Their appearance in Jim Jarmusch’s “Coffee and Cigarettes.”

As an intern for Conan I actually got to sit next to Jack White while he and Meg practiced an acoustic version of ‘Effect and Cause’ – she was super sick that day and really toughed it out. They did a GREAT show. Although I never talked to Jack, just sitting next to him was enough to make my YEAR.

My Favorite moment/memory of the White Strips was when I saw them perform for the first time in Chicago during the “Elephant” tour. They were still doing the sister/brother act and Jack said, ” Me and my sister Meg came to Ohara this morning and we had pancakes!”, his white face paint smeared with a revealing devilish grin. It was the very next day that I was surprised when I reading their concert review in the Chicago sun times that I found out that they were actually married at one point!!!

“I got your phone number written in the back of my bible”

My fave WS moment:

Though I have undoubtedly angered Jack White, I think it’s a bit nasty of him to accuse me of plagiarism merely because his former admiration of my work was not reciprocated.

It all smacks of jealousy to me. I have a bigger collection of hats, a better moustache, a more blistering guitar sound and a fully developed sense of humour. The only thing I can’t understand is why I’m not rich. Yours sincerely, Billy Childish.

P.S. I always stay well within the music industries recommended guidelines of never plagiarising more than 50% of my material. But no matter who my influences may be, I would never stoop so low as to rip off Led Zeppelin.

Favorite moment: Live at the Creepy Crawl in St. Louis ($7 at the door!) in September 2001 right before they blew up! I hadn’t heard any of the music prior to seeing them and the experience was incredible – they were having such a great time and you could tell they were destined for a much larger stage. It TOTALLY made up for getting completely soaked in a deluge of rain while waiting a half an hour for the doors to open, not too mention the ensuing smoke-bath that made me feel like a damp cigarette all throughout the show.

Yes, Jim Jarmusch’s “Coffee and Cigarettes” too. Such a good time.

My favorite moment was hearing the White Blood Cells record for the first time while on tour in Tempe, AZ, listening to it over and over again and while I kept thinking of Led Zeppelin I also kept thinking that I hadn’t heard anything fresh like that since I bought the Fugazi ‘In On The Kill Taker’ record when I was a junior in high school. Then, convincing my buddy to let me have the CD and then listening to it over and over on the overnight drive through the desert to San Diego. It was perfect because there was a full moon and if you’ve ever done that drive you know how desolate and beautiful it is. It really couldn’t have been a better situation to hear something so compelling and timely. Then, when we got to San Diego they happened to be playing at the Casbah and we had a night off. Naively, we showed up at the door around 9 and the show was completely sold-out. That was when I knew something big was going on and it actually made me a little sad because I figured they’d become hugely popular and lose the edge etc. As it worked out, they did make it huge but, as these live recordings prove, they never lost the edge and they managed to stay completely cool and relevant the entire time.

Seeing them at the Troubador.

The first time I heard the opening riffs to “Seven Nation Army.” Whew. Chills up and down my spine.

i saw them at this tiny auditorium inside the masonic temple in detroit (i forget the name of the little theater), it maybe held 400 people, after elephant was released and it was completely amazing. it was like an intimate record release party that made your ears bleed. it was a special night.

or the time jack kicked the lead singer from the von bondies ass at the majestic theater in detroit, how hilarious!

The “Tesla Coil” scene from Jim Jarmusch’s “Coffee and Cigarettes”…pure brilliance.

Favorite live performance was a free show in Union Square back in 2002.
I was unemployed at the time and happened to catch it by chance.
Raw blues, especially when the power failed.

Second favorite: Keyspan Park, Coney Island, Sept. 25, 2005.

Third favorite: Daily Show,

SWEATING IT OUT LOUD IN THE OLD TOWER RECORDS ON SUNSET BLVD!!!! INCREDIBLE

When Jack and Karen decided to move to Nashville and I got to see them all the time at my favorite brunch venue. Not really a “White Stripes” moment, but I’m sure Meg visits.

The first time I ever heard J&MW I was in my bathtub 1 mile north of the in/famaous 8 Mile Road, Detroit, Michigan, listening to their live interview on The Ralph Valdez Program on WDET FM in Detroit.

I’s like, who–what–wow! I nearly drowned in two inches of water.

Hello White Stripes!

Nothing compares to the interview they did for Michel Gondry Directors DVD when they approached Lego to make a set. That was before the video came out, and they said no. Then once the video came out, and was huge, Lego came crawling back asking to make a set. And it was already too late. Hopefully they’ve learned their lesson.

Every time I hear a White Stripe’s song its my favorite White Stripe moment.

last conan.

The unexpected gig in Union Square in 2002–I saw a notice on a mailbox and RAN in flip-flops half a mile to catch them, and they played even after the suits pulled the power. Also, “Little Ghost”–they name-check my tag, and although I don’t know Jack and he doesn’t know me, it was delicious & thrilling.

I never saw them live but I hope I get a chance someday. But when Jack came out and played the guitar at the dead weather concert it was amazing and I was only about five feet from the stage. Incredible!

I grew up on a small isolated island in washington state and when my friends and I first heard the white stripes we were istantly hooked. Then when they came to play at the Tacoma dome in Seattle in 2003 we had to make the 100 mile trip to see them. It was raining terribly that day and we weren’t looking forward to waiting outside in line for hours to get good spots up front. Then something magical happened, when we got on the elevator in the parking garage none of the button would work, so we tried pressing both sides at once and the elevator started moving. When the doors opened we realized we were right next to all the tour buses! We walked around for a minute hoping to run in to Jack and Meg but got scared when we saw a security guard so we ran into a bathroom. We were able to stay there until we heard sound check and got right up to the front and held on to the security fence for dear life as 1,000 more people flooded in.
That show was one of the best of my life, the Yeah Yeah Yeags opened when they were still pretty unknown and Karen O cock walked and choked herslef with the mike cord like and angel. When the White Stripes started everything was mayhem! People were being pulled out of the pit left and right but we held fast and watched them play all of white blood cells and seven nation army. Afterwards we were bruised and bloody from being pummeled so much but were happier than we’d ever been in our 16 years, during the 100 mile journey back to our island.

When they played the Grammy’s. It somehow made the Grammy’s “Legit”. It was probably the best performance that show has ever had. (Or ever will have).

when Jack must’ve given Wayne Cohen that “fiberoptic jesus”… (as mentioned on the FLips fight test e.p.)

putting wichita on the map

The first time I ever saw Gondry’s video for “The Hardest Button to Button” while enrolled in film school. A FUCKING REVELATION.

My FAVORITE White Stripes moment was when they were touring canada, and I couldn’t get tickets to one of their shows. I was so bummed out, but I logged on to a white stripes message board just in time to find out about a secret show they were playing THAT DAY. So I got down there just in time to hear them play 3 songs in a tiny room filled with fans. BEST.MOMENT.EVER.

My favorite White Stripes moment is when I was at summer camp in middle school with my portable sony walkman CD player blasting Ball & Biscuit from the Elephant album so loud that everyone on the noisy school bus could hear the song pulsating through my headphones, wondering why a 13 year old girl was listening to the best rock n’ roll they’d probably ever hear.

My favorite White Stripes moment, is when in the film “This Might Get loud”, in the opening scene Jack takes a couple pieces of plank, and some wire and a coke bottle. He hammers it all together, and plugs a pickup into the amp on the balcony and starts to play the rawest electric sounds with rhythm I have ever heard. He calmly stops playing and turns to the camera and says, “And who says you need a guitar!”

This man and his sister inspire me to no end, I am not a musician, I make films, but they make me feel like I can do anything I damn well wanna.

Padraic

Italian national soccer team winning the World Cup.

My favorite White Stripes moment-hmmm…that is a trick question. I really love everything they do. They are really amazing. I hope to meet them someday.

I’ll never forget when my best friend showed me You Don’t Know What Love Is for the first time, when we were just starting our band a few years ago. I immediately fell in love with The White Stripes and soon with everything else Jack has done. We play You Don’t Know What Love Is at every show as the closing number and pepper in a few other White Stripes and Raconteurs tunes into our set. Every night, the solo on Love Is is amazing, playing it is one of the highlights of my experience with music.

My favorite White Stripes moment is when they are interviewed in Jack’s house for the VPRO Dutch Detroit Rock Documentary and they are asked if they are afraid they would ever lose control (of their band), and Jack says he doesn’t think they will ever be big like they will be playing arenas or anything like that and the camera zooms in and Jack says “It just couldn’t, you know it can’t, we don’t write songs that are gonna be, you know, top 40 hits or anything like that.” I love that moment.

I hope I get to meet Jack White someday. He inspires me so much to learn how to play the guitar and just love music for what it is.

All of them.. simply the best

Their breakout song/video “Fell in Love with a Girl” is still my favorite–love me some legos! The “Conquest” video is a close second.

the performance a couple of people already mentioned here and i feel so damn grateful to catch was their free gig in Union Square back in ’02. it had been a little over a year since 9/11 and this city still felt strange and ill-at-ease with itself… and perhaps ready, more than ever, to hear some rock-out blues. i remember the shining sun and jack was raw, and meg was banging and they played like FOREVER. literally. they went so substantially over the set time that they actually got unplugged by the crew… and they still kept going! what a beautiful day.

Saw Jack White in the Detroit airport and me, being the cool kid I am, walked very quickly behind him, tapped in on the shoulder and said “Jack?! i’m such a big fan!”

this TALL ASS good smelling man, shook my hand with the ultimate of grace, and said “thanks so much!”

Told him about the time I saw them at St. Andrews back in the dayyy, and he barely believed me. He shook my hand again, went about his way, and i went back to the gate and listened to Elephant on repeat all the way back to NYC!

Jackie, you my homie for LIFE!

September 28, 2005, House of Blues, Atlantic City NJ. The first White Stripes shows I ever attended. Afterwards, I promised myself to never miss a show whenever they came nearby again. They covered Bob Dylan’s Lovesick that night. I saw the Killers the very next night, and couldn’t believe how weak they were in comparison to The White Stripes. I’ve been chasing White Stripes vinyl, bootlegs, posters and more ever since, and have yet to find another modern band that even comes close to their energy and artistry.

Favorite moment in White Stripes history is without a doubt the one-note secret show they did in Canada because only they have the balls and the sense of humor to actually pull that off.

when Jack made Meg officially announce that he doesn’t stop her from talking during interviews. “I’m just quiet”

My favorite moment was when Jack and Meg were playing at Madison Square Garden and Jack introduced Meg when she was going to sing In the Cold, Cold Night by saying: “And now for her Madison Square Garden debut, Miss Meg White!” It just showed how proud they were to be playing there and Jack and Meg’s playful relationship. That show was incredible and unforgettable.

My favorite White Stripes moment was when they performed on Conan O’Brien everyday for a week. This was back in 2003. They performed songs from their album “Elephant”.

My favorite White Stripes moment in history is when they played Let’s Build A Home/Going Back to Memphis/John the Revelator live on Conan O’Brien and Jack walks over and plays his guitar solo on Conan’s desk. That was so awesome!

My favourite moment in white stripes history is actually not about their history, but rather mine, and how I came to fall in love with their music. When I was attending middle school I decided I would try to be cool and relevant by taking percussion class. I was actually really into it, but I was horrible at schooling and failed the class. But what really stood out to me in that class was the fact that in this run down dilapidated music room, sitting in random places in old rusted and broken down chairs, the one thing that brought all the kids (skaters, gangsters and me) together is that before class would start (because it was after lunch) we would all grab an instrument and bust out Seven Nation Army. One kid would run over to the piano and another to the drum set. Guitars, keyboard you name it we all started to just play. I was fortunate enough to get stuck with the triangle… which I became a master at!!! Joking… but really I played the triangle… what a loser. So after that my love for the brother-sister husband-wife human-robot best duo-tone colour loving band in the universe grew so that my heart exploded. Or maybe it was just Jimmy the exploder… not sure but there is a White Stripes Box set to fill the hole it left, or is there???

There was this girl, I was keen on her but we weren’t getting on. I heard on the radio when she won a free ticket to see this band I’d never heard of called the White Stripes. They were going to be playing a local bar in Palmerston North, New Zealand. In full on stalker mode, I decided to go along. There were maybe 50 people there, if that (this was in 2000 or thereabouts in rural New Zealand). The girl was there alright, but as soon as the White Stripes kicked into action, she was forgotten. Went and saw them the next night in Wellington and all.

They did a free, “pop-up” concert during lunchtime in Union Square Park back in ’02 that was great!

My favorite is probably the most common one… Seeing the video for “Fell In Love With a Girl” and loving it, leading me to discover the rest of their music.

there’s a friend of mine that’s still unsure whether jack and meg are married, siblings, or related and married. also legos!

Conan O’Brien everyday for a week

started my love affair with them the first time I saw them live at the Great American Music Hall (2001!!!) after De Stijl had come out.

fell in love with a girl.
