Southern California artist Lola Gil‘s dreamlike portraits are packed with imaginative subjects and curious rituals placed in surreal, often ethereal settings.
The artist, who goes simply by Lola, applies a self-taught technique emblematic of her local heritage, with each painting inspired by an antique frame from her collection of flea-market finds. The personal narratives harmoniously blend with fantasy, created, says Lola, while being “pulled along by the moon as the unexpected guest, mesmerized by its significance for the love of a story.”
Visit Lola’s website, follow her on Twitter, and if you’re in Los Angeles, catch Ipsum Factum, Lola’s second solo show at Corey Helford Gallery.

Oh PLEASE!!! The success and exposure of this poorly executed derivative of Joe Sorren’s work is soley dependent on that last photo and story of the poor näif waif pixie. Lame.
Really UA…? i own multiple Sorren originals and feel i have a good take on the artists of today’s pop surrealism world. This artist does not deserve your lame words. hats off to Lola and her unique creations. why would anyone have an issue with another persons success?
Really.
Lola is hot. Her art looks like juxtapoz rubbish though.
I think this work is beautiful.
And why defame someone’s artistic vision? Make your own art, or don’t – but live and let live.
These works are beautiful.
UA your comments come off as bitter, rather than a justifiable critique. It’s quite obvious from a comparsion between the two artists that Lorel has created her own unique vision. Sure, the element of pop surrealism is a common thread but the style of the two artists is obviously completely different.
I have nothing against people negatively critquing artwork but a little bit of forethought and intelligence goes a long way.
i realy like your work Lola :)
God you lot talk a load of pish. She has talent, probably much more than most of you guys. Stop being so jealous and spiteful. I feel sorry for you guys I really do.
Great work Lola!
Your work is wonderful. Enjoyed seeing it and wish you much success.
As for the hateful commentators, they are just jealous and small. If they can’t give an intelligent critique and just have fun bashing, they aren’t worth listening to.
It’s interesting that her work, while it may seem light, sort of proves its darker depths through the odd vitriol of the reactions it provoked up top. In general, bravo to anyone who devotes their life to art. Specifically, her work is one of my favorite kinds of art: Pretty/Creepy. It’s not realism, but it is very human.
Its just pitiful some people don’t and won’t understand artists’ expressions. It’s almost impossible to explain it to them. You works are good,Lola.Keep it up.
