“Everyone has a story. Everyone deserves to be painted.” That’s Matt Held, the Brooklyn-based artist behind a recent series of portraits based on Facebook profile pictures. The idea was born in November 2008 after Held — who had been struggling to get the skin tone right in his work — decided to use his wife’s profile pic for some practice. From there, things took off, and now the “I’ll have my portrait painted by Matt Held” Facebook group is over 10,000 members strong. Check out a profile of Held from our friends at Babelgum, along with some of his recent work, after the jump.

Pretty cool. Feeds the same narcissism that fuels social networks. Facebook took off when they allowed users to upload photos. Most don’t know that ‘ol zuck once swore they never would.

Not impressed. I know lots of people who are doing this and doing it better. I hate to be such a debby-downer but it’s really not original. Perhaps that is a statement of the times in itself.
This video was put out last year. The project is going on two years. Cal – who is doing it better?
Yeah – old news and his new stuff is better than when the project first started. Cool project though. Post-Warholian15minutesoffameism.
Love his new stuff!
