Sometimes we can recognize an image without being sure what it is. Some pop-culture icons are embedded in our minds to the extent that, with only a glance, certain colors and shapes feel familiar, yet we can’t articulate what we’re looking at. Artist Aaron Noble likes to play with this phenomenon. With scraps of muscles, claws, capes and armor, Noble pieces together super-hero collages. His paintings look as if the characters from comic books were sucked through a dimension-altering vortex only to reemerge on the other side in a state of anatomical disarray.
