Daily Dose Pick: Kim Gordon

Sonic Youth star Kim Gordon earned fame as a musician, but she’s been steadily gaining ground in the art world, where she began.

A graduate of LA’s Otis Art Institute, Gordon has already established herself as an influential player in music, media, fashion, and film. Experimental in nature and raw in production, her visual art dynamically reflects and embraces not only the noise that surrounds her life, but also the chaos that encompasses all of us.

View Gordon’s art portfolio on Sonic Youth’s website, read Richard Kern’s interview with the artist, check out her current show at KS Art and her recent exhibition at John McWhinnie, shop for clothes at her online X-girl store, and buy Performing/Guzzling, her expansive, new artist’s book.

Everyone that's so wholeheartedly criticizing this....you're all enormous douchebags. Giant, awful hipster douchebags.

I love KG. I love SY. But...wow. This is...just shitty. I could sloppily paint words on a canvas too--but would someone put it in a gallery? Nope. She's a rock star, she can do whatever she wants. Depressing.

Kim Gordons work is not art,it's nothing less than MUCK! ,,,,YUCK...It SUCKS.

dude... she's kim gordon... I think the pussy galore drawing is awseome... I would totally hang that in my bedroom. best,

Obnoxiously bad art. I wonder who she thinks her audience is?

when i first saw this last night it ticked me off just like the majority of people commenting, thinking where's my gallery show it this is all it takes! today i looked at it again. i don't like the artwork any better. but, kim gordon and sonic youth have spoken to me well enough for many years that -- so what. you know, you earn your connections, and you use them. let her have a gallery show, and let collectors buy her art. i think she's awesome, and i don't have to like her paintings to maintain that. as far as people buying the pieces, they would work better in the right setting than a framed set-list. which i for one wouldn't turn down.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this was a waste of time...

it's depressing when you're an artist actually trying to resurrect a modicum of dignity and public support for art, and some famous person gets to have this banal stuff broadcast across the net. It looks ridiculous in a white gallery. If that's the point she's trying to make, let's just consider it done, and move the fuck on.

really people buy this... really this is a new idea... is writing "pussy" taboo enough to be shock art or something.... ...I definitely know nothing of about art maybe this is too high concept for my monkey brain if someone found a scrap of paper on the floor that messily said pussy galore would they say I need to find the person made this amazing piece!!? if so in downtown there is this bum who lives by me that writes "cock powder" all over his shirt he evidently has what it takes to be a Art Star

I'm really glad to read these other posts. I am an artist -a real artist, not one who wears it on their sleeve- and I just didn't 'get' this. I felt like a suburban mom until I realized that there was nothing to get. Vacuous art derived from vacuous thoughts. It's like a Madonna children's fable.

This says alot about society, as the messy/natural/artistic adult is not one that "fits in" to high standards of technicality, presentation, expectation, keeping up with the jonses etc. Even if shes only playing with semiotics, shes still saying alot. Keep it raw kim! I love it.

was her point to be bad to show how pretentious "fine" art can be at times?

Hype passing for art. So many artists are so afraid of being deep they're becoming vapid.

Give me a break. Nothing looks like it took over an hour for her to make or more than five minutes to think up. But I guess she gets a free pass cause she's a rock star. Pussy Galore? Really? What a bunch of crap!

so, Kim Gordon had something to do with this t-shirt? http://www.x-girl.jp/#/items/0502114

Sticks & stones may break some bones, but shit is never Art.

great musician but bad bad art...surely this comment will get people upset but I am also a curator and artist...this is bad

She's Kim f**king Gordon, though, I sort of think she gets to do as she damn well pleases.

i meant fine artists like THIS

i hate fine artists. so talentless. they make crap and then try to intellectualize it.

is this a joke? holy fine art. crap

C'mon, man. Seriously? Does anyone think that any of this would garner more than a two second glance if she wasn't a rock star? Did any of it take more than two seconds to make? Basta!

About as boring as Sonic Jam Band.

These are awful. Kim Gordon should stick with music.
