We recently told you that Synecdoche, New York director Charlie Kaufman was in the process of writing his first novel, but now Deadline brings news that the quirky filmmaker will be adding more work to his already full plate. Kaufman will be adapting a book series set to become a new Hunger Games-esque film franchise. The award-winning young adult series by Patrick Ness is called Chaos Walking, and Kaufman will be “adapting” the first book in the dystopian tale. Deadline doesn’t specify if that means the director/writer will be behind the camera or not, but we’ll happily take a screenplay regardless. Ness’ story is set in the future with humans colonizing a distant planet. “When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes, chaos ensues, and a corrupt autocrat threatens to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race.” Can you see Kaufman creating for teen-centric audiences, or will his quips and subtleties be lost? Let us know if you’ve read the books below.
