Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks have a lot in common: They are two of Hollywood’s most likeable actors; their careers both peaked in the ’90s; and they’ve both previously starred in movies that make up romantic comedy canon (Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, and Notting Hill, if you’re feeling generous), but never together — until now. Larry Crowne, which is also directed by Hanks, tells the story of a guy who loses his job, buys himself a scooter, and decides to go back to college. Roberts plays the public-speaking professor who he ends up falling for. According to official synopsis her character is married, but we see no hints of that conflict (or any conflict really) in the trailer; while we understand that the film’s target demographic isn’t looking for something edgy, it seems insulting to everyone involved to serve up something so bland.
