Tonight, in Times Square at the stroke of midnight, more than 32,256 lights will be glowing on the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball as it descends to ring in 2017. But Lugano-Switzerland-based photographer Stefano Gardel, who we first learned about on Fubiz, sees a different Times Square — one devoid of the tourist-heavy crowds and celebratory madness. The artist photographed the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood at night, focused on the area’s towering billboards, neon signs, and architectural elements. It’s the quieter side of Times Square, but not without its darker mysteries. See more of Gardel’s Times Square street photography in our gallery.
